Original Crystal Skull art for Blu Ray

This is the art I did for the Crystal Skull spread in the Indy blu ray.  I was told to change the Kate Blanchett character Irina and Indy.  They hated this Indy.  Although I was quite happy with it.  So I changed them to the version you see on the box.  One thing I didn't change was Indy's placement.  I placed the new head right where this one is, but somewhere along the way, it was nudged over so he's midway between Irina and Mutt.  Like it was an oversight on my part.  Several other elements were nudged around as well.  None of this improved the design.  I suspect some of you are thinking 'what's the big deal?' and some of you know how aggrevating this is.  Don't get me wrong, I really appreciate the gig, and the people that fought to have my artwork in the set at all, but this kinda thing can drive ya crazy.

  1. Jason,

As someone who has followed your work for years, I was very happy to hear that your art would be on the blu-ray.

As to these changes, I prefer the updated versions of both Indy and Irina. But your original placement of Indy's head looks better than on the box.

    Congratulations on the gig.

    1. Thanks Dan. I find the original versions of both make for more interesting design and narrative, but the new ones are fine, lateral moves, but so unnecessary. These kind of changes usually come from people trying to justify they're jobs.
The only infuriating thing is the moving of the head. The different elements were rendered separately, then combined to accommodate graphics, and so that the elements could be vignetted if need be, but not to change my composition. Errgh.

  2. I like the positioning and colors of the first version and absolutely like the first Indy better, where Irina is concerned, I'm not sure but I think I like the second version a bit better than the first.

  3. I like the first Indy the best, going with gut reaction to the visual of his face, on the first one, ...that really seems like the wise-cracking Indy, he's about to react to some comment or something with a witty remark...I guess it's got more "twinkle" in his eye, and has a bit more haggard look, and of course in the film he even makes fun of his age, getting older/etc. The 2nd is still a good rendering of him, but I'm not as pulled in emotionally to what's going on. The first kind of ties him, Marion, and Mutt together. I'm guessing that the file you sent them had multiple layers, photoshop or whatever. I can see that moving Indy over to the right would maybe break up the diagonal compositional line. I really don't see how they "hated" that original Indy. Did he look too old for them?
